Learn how to save a life in a 9Network special

Saturday, October 15, at 3:00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now

Heart of the Nation, The World’s Largest CPR Class will return this Saturday, October 15 at 3.00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

The enduring passion project of original Yellow Wiggle and cardiac arrest survivor Greg Page AMHeart of the Nation, The World’s Largest CPR Class is presented in conjunction with Page’s charity, Heart of the Nation, and will build on the success of last year’s inaugural broadcast on the 9Network.

Page says: “As someone who was successfully resuscitated by bystanders who knew what to do, I know the value of everyday people knowing how to do CPR and use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator). That’s why we want to hold this event to educate and empower more people to step up and save a life.”

Hosted by Weekend TODAY’s Richard Wilkins together with Page, and featuring 9News Sydney’s Emma Lawrence, the 90-minute special marks a unique chance for every Australian to learn or refresh their life-saving CPR skills, while raising awareness of AEDs across the country.

“Last year’s event was amazing,” Page says. “And this year we are hopeful that more people tune in to refresh their skills and knowledge.”

This year viewers can look forward to appearances by The Block’s Rachel and Ryan, plus former Australian cricketer Ryan Campbell who will share his personal experience with sudden cardiac arrest alongside the touching, real-life stories from people across Australia.

Integral to Heart of the Nation, The World’s Largest CPR Class is the class itself, designed with both adults and children in mind and taught once again by Daniel Gay of Surf Life Saving NSW. Featuring real-life demonstrations and clear, easy-to-recall techniques, the class will empower participants with vital CPR skills that could one day save a life.

Viewers can also download a certificate of participation to mark their involvement in Heart of the Nation, The World’s Largest CPR Class by scanning the QR code on-screen or on the heartofthenation.com.au website.

“You don’t need formal training in CPR or how to use an AED to save a life,” Page says. “Any attempt at resuscitation is better than none – the only wrong move is doing nothing at all.”

Good Weekend and Traveller celebrate the great Aussie getaway with annual 52 Weekends Away edition

Celebrate the magic of our own backyard with the 32nd iteration of Good Weekend’s annual 52 Weekends Away edition, on sale this Saturday, October 8 in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, and online at smh.com.au/goodweekend and theage.com.au/goodweekend, as well as on the BrisbaneTimes and WAtoday.

While international borders have largely re-opened, Australians haven’t lost their love of a local escape which was reignited during the pandemic, and Good Weekend has been celebrating the domestic travel sector longer than anyone else.

This special annual edition of Good Weekend, produced in partnership with its SMH/Age stablemate Traveller, features new or revamped places to stay in every state and territory, for every weekend of the year. Special highlights include the opportunity to enjoy your own surf shack on NSW’s laid-back north coast, sleep under the stars in a luxury bubble tent in rural Victoria, rug up in a cosy alpine-style stone and timber cabin in Tasmania’s Bay of Fires, or escape on a city break with your furry friend at Sydney’s latest pet-friendly hotel.

“The short break has changed markedly since our first 52 Weekends Away issue in 1990, and in recent years we’ve taken this much-loved edition national in recognition of the fact that it’s increasingly easy to get on a plane and go interstate for a long weekend – or even a short one,” said Good Weekend editor Katrina Strickland.

“Australians rediscovered their own backyard during COVID-19, and whilst we’ve started travelling abroad again, that renewed love of our own country has not diminished.

“It’s wonderful too, to see so many new places springing up around the country, and the attention to detail of their hosts, whether in the local gin they supply for the mini-bar or the work by regional artists on their walls, or simply their friendly, personal service. It’s honestly one of the best things about putting this issue together, seeing that level of loving care and attention to detail.”

The edition is also chock-a-block with travel and luxury advertisements, including a nine-page Destination NSW reverseback and advertising from the likes of Audi, Hermes, Smeg and Breitling as well as travel clients Flight Centre, Holland America Line, Journey Beyond, Ignite, Spicers, Intrepid, APT, Ponant, Travel Associates, NRMA and numerous hotels.

“We have partnered with Destination NSW on this issue for three years now, and it’s terrific to have a commercial partner who is as invested in the traveller experience as we are, and busting to tell readers about all the great things to do and see in their state,” said Strickland.

As is tradition, every cover of the 52 Weekends Away edition features an artwork by a local artist. This year the Good Weekend team selected a beautiful photograph by Tamara Dean, taken in her studio in regional NSW.

“As soon as we saw this image we knew it was the one,” said Strickland. “To me, it evokes the feeling of freedom, joy and playfulness that travel inspires.”

Good Weekend 52 Weekends Away edition will be available in this Saturday’s edition of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, and online at smh.com.au/goodweekend and theage.com.au/goodweekend, as well as brisbanetimes.com.au/good-weekend and watoday.com.au/good-weekend.

PM tops AFR Magazine’s Power List

BEHIND THE CURTAIN ON WHO REALLY RUNS AUSTRALIA

Anthony Albanese has been named as Australia’s most powerful person, marking the return of the role of Prime Minister to the top of The Australian Financial Review Magazine’s Power List.

Mr Albanese jumps from ninth on the 2021 Power List into the top spot in 2022. The premiers of the major states, who pushed Scott Morrison from number one to number two in 2021, have fallen out of the Power List as the COVID-19 pandemic lessens its hold over Australians.

The federal election has driven a complete overhaul of the Power List, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers now second on the Overt List and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong third. The six new teal independent MPs as well as Greens leader Adam Bandt join the Power List for the first time, in 4th and 8th spots respectively.

AFR Magazine’s Power issue, now in its 22nd year, is the first comprehensive look inside the Albanese government, revealing the ministers in the PM’s inner circle as well as the most influential advisers behind the scenes.

The cover of the Power issue is a stirring portrait of the Prime Minister taken in the living room of the council house where he grew up in Camperdown in Sydney’s inner west. The PM gave AFR Magazine a rare tour of the two-bedroom unit in which he was raised by his mother, Maryanne, and which he often references in speeches. It marks the first time Mr Albanese has been photographed inside the house. The backdrop inspired the shoots with other Power listers who were photographed with something that is special to them.

“The May election result suggests that the Power List panellists got it right when they voted, by the slimmest of margins, to put the premiers above Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the top of last year’s list,” said Financial Review Editor-in-chief Michael Stutchbury.

“Now a whole new power structure has been put in place around Anthony Albanese and the first federal Labor government in nearly a decade. As a Power List panelist, it was fascinating to be part of the conversation with Labor insiders about how that power is distributed.”

Anthony Albanese’s Chief of Staff, Tim Gartrell, takes out the top spot on the Covert List, joined by Glyn Davis, Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet; Paul Erickson, National Secretary of the ALP; Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell; and Greg Combet, Chairman of Industry Super Australia.

The Power List consists of three main categories – Overt, Covert and Cultural – which are debated at length by two separate panels of well-connected insiders drawn from Australia’s political, business and cultural spheres. Panellists who decided the Overt and Covert Lists included Stephen Smith and Julie Bishop – both former Foreign Affairs Ministers – company directors Nicola Wakefield Evans and Jillian Broadbent, teals adviser Anthony Reed and Labor insiders Dee Madigan and Lidija Ivanovski.

The panel that decided the Cultural Power list included Powerhouse Museum CEO Lisa Havilah, Warner Music Australasia President Dan Rosen, AFL Commissioner Gabrielle Trainor and chair of Bangarra Dance Theatre Phillipa McDermott.

Leading the Cultural Power list is Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney who is at the centre of the push to amend the constitution to create an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. In second spot is Cathy McGowan, founder of the Community Independents Project and a mentor to many of the teal independent MPs.

The edition of the Power Issue also features the revealing story of how Scott Morrison lost the federal election. Senior writer Aaron Patrick goes deep inside the 2022 campaign to get the Coalition re-elected, and the exact moment it unravelled.
