The Ashes have taken a fiery turn and England will be out to make a dent in Australia’s 2-0 series lead in the Third Test, exclusive, live and free from 7.30pm AEST Thursday, July 6, on the 9Network and 9Now. 

After the thrilling Second Test went down to the wire in a deluge of controversy, the series moves to Headingley in Leeds, and it’s win or bust for England. Australia rose above the hostile crowd at Lord’s to show their mettle and are ready to go up another notch in the north of England.

Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith have led with the bat so far while Pat Cummins has been at his damaging best for the Aussie bowling attack. Captain Ben Stokes will hold the aces for England with his brutal batting style if the home team are to win the third match in the five-test series.

Nine’s commentary team is hosted by Roz Kelly, with expert comments from former Australian captain Mark Taylor, Ashes winner Ian Healy and former international Callum Ferguson. Taylor will be joined on the ground by Louise Ransome.

Mark Taylor said: “After a superb test match at Lord’s, with its share of controversy, the Aussies are a win away from breaking a 22-year drought and winning a series in England.

“A draw will do for Australia but neither side will be thinking that way. The pressure is firmly on England but if their captain Ben Stokes is the benchmark, they will come out swinging in Leeds.

“England have good memories from Leeds four years ago but the Aussies are desperate to hang onto the urn. Another great contest awaits.”

The Australian Financial Review is launching Australia’s first prestige watch fair, to be held in Sydney on September 22 and 23.

The About Time Watch Fair will feature many of the highlights from Geneva’s giant Watches & Wonders fair as well as other recent releases. Thirteen of the world’s finest makers of mechanical watches are taking part. Participants include Cartier, Chopard, Grand Seiko, Hublot, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Louis Vuitton, Panerai, Piaget, Ralph Lauren, Roger Dubuis, Tag Heuer, and Vacheron Constantin. 

The Financial Review’s watch editor, Bani McSpedden, said an event like About Time was long overdue. “The Financial Review pioneered coverage of the watch industry in Australia and we’re the only media outlet that covers mechanical watchmakers as the serious businesses that they have become.

“The About Time Watch Fair demonstrates how committed the Financial Review is to deepening our coverage in this area,” McSpedden said.

Many brands are holding these presentations in areas of their flagships that are normally only accessible to their VIP customers. According to official Swiss export figures, sales of watches in the Oceania region are up 21 per cent in the year to May, a rate of growth that’s double the rest of Asia.

9Now will begin the road to the Paralympics when the Para World Athletics Championships stream live and free from July 8 to 17.

The best para athletes in the world will compete in France, with more than half the spots on our national team for the 2024 Paralympics up for grabs. 

Australia will field a strong team of 39 athletes, including three reigning Paralympic champions – Madison de Rozario, James Turner and Vanessa Low – and seven world champions.

Plus, the next generation of Aussie para athletes, such as Angus Hincksman who at 17 is the youngest on the team, will line up in the middle-distance running events to show what the future holds for the green and gold. 

Nine’s Director of Sport, Brent Williams, said: “The 2023 Para World Championships is a pivotal event for athletes and viewers on the journey to the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.

The nation’s favourite game show, hosted by Eddie McGuire, will see six tennis stars and sports personalities playing for a charity of their choice in the lead-up to Channel 9’s Wimbledon coverage. 

The 16-time Grand Slam doubles champion and current 9Network sports broadcaster Todd Woodbridge will take the hot seat, along with Samantha Stosur, former Australian former number one doubles player. Nine has today announced the appointment of Suzie Cardwell as Chief Data Officer; a newly created role which will enable Nine to accelerate its lead in the market by leveraging data as a strategic asset across the group, positively impacting consumer and commercial experiences, as well as identifying future opportunities.

An seasoned media executive of more than 20 years, Cardwell brings a wealth of consumer and commercial experience and expertise in media, digital and data to the role. With a proven track record in leading successful data-driven change programs, she has held prominent leadership roles in other large media organisations, including News Corp and Foxtel, prior to joining Nine.

As Chief Data Officer, Cardwell will report to Nine’s Chief Digital Officer, Alex Parsons, and be the single point of accountability for data for Nine, covering governance, strategy and planning with execution on data projects, aligned to the group strategy.

Alex Parsons said: “We are delighted to welcome Suzie as our new Chief Data Officer. Wimbledon, the biggest of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, commences Monday, July 3, from 7.30pm on Nine and 9Now. 

Over two weeks, the cream of the crop will battle it out at the All England Lawn Tennis Club for the Gentlemen’s Singles Trophy and the Rosewater Dish for the women, all on Nine’s exclusive free coverage, with the action also available to stream ad-free, live and on-demand on Stan Sport.

Nine’s Wide World of Sports commentary team will include Nick McArdle, Jelena Dokic, Samantha Stosur, Brett Phillips and Brenton Speed, with Tony Jones, Todd Woodbridge and Alica Molik on the ground at Wimbledon.

Ready to redeem himself will be World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, who suffered from cramps in his recent semi-final against Djokovic at Roland Garros, while Britain’s hope Cameron Norrie (World No.13), who had a dream run to make the semi-finals last year, is another fancied contender. 

In the women’s draw, reigning champion Elena Rybakina (World No.3) has had a strong year, making the Australian Open final and winning two Masters tournaments. World No.1 Iga Świątek is aiming to add a grass court major to her victory at Roland Garros, while Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka (World No.2) is a big threat.

The Sharks and Dragons local derby fires up Beanie Round on Thursday Night Footy from Shark Park in the Sutherland Shire.

Earth Science Investigators (of Earth), the 9Network’s new kids TV show, premieres Monday, July 3, at 7.30am on 9Go!

Following the antics of two amateur detectives from an alien planet who have come to Earth to investigate the human race, the show takes the form of a comedic investigation, with each episode focusing on a different aspect of human behaviour or biology.

The two aliens, Major Letdown and Private Groupchat, must answer questions such as Why do humans have pets? Why do humans grow to different sizes? and Why don’t humans run on batteries?

Major Letdown, played by Ashlee Lollback (SMASHHDOWN: Search for the GOAT) and Private Groupchat, played by Arnijka Larcombe-Weate (The Bureau of Magical Things and Boy Swallows Universe), crash-landed on Earth with a mission to understand humanity and report their findings to General Ignorance, played by Michael Balk (SMASHHDOWN: Search for the GOAT and Dirtgirlworld).

The series, written, filmed and produced at 9Network’s Mt Coot-Tha studios in Queensland, consists of 50 fact-filled educational episodes.

Geoff Cooper, Executive Producer and Programming Manager at Nine Queensland, said: “This is the funniest program I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in, showcasing the comedic talents Queensland has to offer. The original concept conceived by Dominic Morris has been honed by the fabulous team we’ve put together, each person bringing something to the table that breaks new ground in factual children’s content.

The first episode launches into the body’s digestive system, literally, complete with all the gross-out humour you’d expect, to answer: Why do humans eat?

From discovering what happens inside our bodies when we’re hungry, to how produce is actually grown and even a “live cross” into the digestive system to discover where consumed food goes, the episode ensures no stone is left unturned in answering important scientific questions.

The Nine Podcast Network posted a new record high monthly audience of 1.7 million listeners in May 2023. 

The popular catch-up podcasts of Nine’s talk stations: 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR, have seen a surge in demand, recording an impressive 51% YoY growth. This upswing was driven by a rise in listenership across our key Breakfast, Mornings, Drive, and Sport programming.

Nine’s original podcasts also saw 19% uplift in key categories of News, Sport, and Business, as well as strong growth in Investigative Journalism.

INVESTIGATIONS

Australia’s leading investigative podcast, Hannah’s Story, examines the shocking and heartbreaking story of the murder of Hannah Clarke and her three young children. As confronting as this story is, listeners have tuned in to hear more about coercive control – from the relationship, to the crime, through to the coronial inquest. The podcast has received more than 600,000 downloads since launching in May (as at June 23), and was the number one ranked show on both Apple and Spotify’s podcast charts.

Nine’s suite of news podcasts, including the hourly news bulletins, Please Explain, 9News Podcast and The Fin, are essential listening for more than 400,000 listeners in May, an increase of 143% YoY.

SPORT

Attracting more than 377,000 monthly listeners in May 2023, Nine’s popular slate of sports podcasts are a hit with fans. As State of Origin atmosphere hits fever pitch, footy fans gained exclusive insider perspectives from the Maroon’s camp via The Billy Slater Podcast, and flocked back to the second season of the popular Stories of Origin documentary series. While for AFL fans, Eddie and Jimmy continues to set the agenda each week of the season. Listeners can’t get enough of their unique insight and analysis of the game, resulting in an additional 100,000+ viewers to the video podcast on 9Now and Youtube throughout the season.

Australia is out to extend their 1-0 series lead by fighting fire with fire when the second Test of The Ashes airs exclusive, live and free from 7.30pm AEST tomorrow – Wednesday, June 28 on the 9Network and 9Now. 

For all the hype around England’s Bazball playing style, it was the Aussies who made a statement in the First Test in a down-to-the-wire match that has set the tone for the series as it moves onto the home of cricket – Lord’s in London.  

Pat Cummins delivered with bat and ball when under pressure, and will need batsmen Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith and Marnus Labushagne to squash the vocal threats of English bowlers Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson. 

Nine’s commentary team is hosted by Roz Kelly, with expert comments from former Australian captain Mark Taylor, World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch and former international Callum Ferguson. Taylor will be joined on the ground at all five Tests by Louise Ransome.
