Queensland backs women with $3.2 million investment in FW Jobs Academy

Future Women’s Jobs Academy will play an important role in securing Queensland women’s economic futures, thanks to new investment from the state government.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Minister for Women Shannon Fentiman have announced $3.2 million for 500 additional Queensland women to access this groundbreaking program.

FW Jobs Academy is delivered flexibly and virtually, supporting women who face barriers to employment. The program connects women looking for work with employers that are crying out for skilled labour, while also providing mentoring and upskilling opportunities.

FW Managing Director Helen McCabe welcomed the funding, and says there is already a significant level of interest from Queensland women, eager to sign up.

“FW Jobs Academy is disrupting traditional employment programs. We’ve created a program that meets women where they’re at, offering support tailored to their needs,” said McCabe.

“Dignity is at the core of what we’re doing, so that every woman in the Jobs Academy feels welcome and respected. We’re proud to partner with forward-thinking employers who are interested in tapping into one of Australia’s most under-utilised resources: women.”

According to research by Impact Economics, there are one million skilled Australian women who are not participating in paid work but would like to. Up to 200,000 of those women live in Queensland but need help to rediscover their strengths, find confidence and make the connections which lead to a job.

Brisbane-based Jobs Academy graduate Sairah Zubair Khan was part of a 2022 federally-funded intake of the program. Kahn says Jobs Academy was instrumental in helping her regain confidence, access information and land work that is secure and meaningful.

“I wanted to find my work and identity again. I’m only 46. I’m an asset to the workforce and very much should be utilised. I’m having my second age of my working life and I feel the best I’ve ever been,” said Khan. “Future Women and Jobs Academy builds that credibility for you. They are partners with a lot of different groups and industries.”

The FW Jobs Academy is currently supported by the Australian Government to support 2,000 women over three years to return to the workforce. The Jobs Academy is designed by women, for women, and meets them where they’re at. The program partners with major employers across Australia including HESTA, CyberCX, Salesforce, Nine and Microsoft to fill job vacancies, and give women a new start in life.

All eyes on Origin hopefuls this weekend on Nine

It’s the halfway point of the closest premiership in memory and that signifies make or break for teams outside the top 8 needing to start charging to the finals this week, beginning Thursday at 7.30pm on Channel 9HD and 9Now.

STREAM NRL FOR FREE ON 9NOW

After an up and down beginning to their 2023 campaigns the Gold Coast Titans and Wests Tigers kick off the round on Thursday Night Footy.

Despite their inconsistency, both teams still find themselves within striking distance of the top 8 and have plenty to play for.

Then on Friday Night Footy the feel good story of the season rolls into Manly’s 4 Pines Park when Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins meet the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

A never-say-die attitude has endeared the Dolphins to rugby league fans in their first season, but they are yet to win a game outside Queensland. Maroons State of Origin and Sea Eagles captain Daly Cherry-Evans will be at his scheming best to keep it that way.

Then Sunday Arvo Footy offers the biggest storyline of the round. New South Wales Blues halfback-elect Nicho Hynes gets his final audition for the jersey left vacant by the injured Nathan Cleary when his Sharks line up against the Storm and their champion Maroons playmaker Cameron Munster in Melbourne.

Blues coach Brad Fittler will provide his commentary on the game live while Maroons coach Billy Slater reports from the sideline, both exclusively on the 9Network and 9Now from 3.00pm Sunday.

Isaac, Brooke and Lulu share The Summit cash prize of $490,000

Three trekkers are sharing the spoils and walking away with a life-changing total of $490,000 after conquering the peak in Nine’s big adventure program, The Summit.

Facing a gruelling 14-day deadline in the pristine alps of New Zealand’s South Island, Brooke, Lulu and Isaac reached the summit and were triumphant among the 14 everyday Aussies who started the journey. They were up against dangerous terrain, heart-racing obstacles and the “mountain’s Keeper”, following their every move, as they endeavoured to conquer the mountain and win their shot at one million dollars.

But when these three finally made it, after being physically, mentally and morally tested, little did they realise that was just the beginning – they were about to face another mighty twist.

As host Jai Courtney told the exhausted trio at the top of the mountain, “be kind to those on your way up, because you never know who you’re going to meet on your way down”. In a shock ending, the 11 trekkers who were voted out or cut from the competition were given the power to decide how the prizemoney would be shared.

After pleading their case to the eliminated trekkers and answering tough questions, Isaac was granted a massive $250,000, Brooke $150,000, and Lulu $90,000.

Isaac, 33, from Dubbo said: “To have made it to the top of the summit has been the greatest achievement of my life. I’ve pushed my mind and body to new heights and made some lifelong friends along the way.

“The first thing I’m going to do with the money is buy my mum a new kitchen. Thank you to the teams at Channel 9 and Endemol Shine. You gave me the opportunity to change my life.”

Brooke, 38, from Adelaide said: “Making it to the top is a massive personal accomplishment for me in more ways than anyone can imagine. The game was gruelling, but I came well prepared with a strategy that took a lot of careful planning each day during the experience.

“To win the money will be life-changing for me. The first thing I will buy is a new car. I’ll put the rest away for a deposit on a house.”

Lulu, 38, from Fremantle said: “It means so much to me to be standing on top of the summit. Getting in touch with my grit and determination, chasing the thrills and peaking with excitement. And inspiring my children, family, young girls and women who can do anything. There’s no obstacle too big that we can’t overcome. Anything is possible.”

The Summit is an original concept developed by Endemol Shine Australia (a Banijay Company) and NINE.
