The murder of Lyn Dawson

Uncover the full story of Lynette Dawson’s disappearance when the true-crime series The Murder of Lyn Dawson premieres this Sunday at 8pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

In January 1982, when Lynette Dawson, a loving mother and wife, vanished, her husband, Christopher Dawson, claimed that she had called him and told him she needed time away. While almost everyone, including the police, believed his story, those closest to Lynette knew it didn’t add up and that she would have never abandoned her two little girls.

Over two Sunday nights, this special program presents revelations about the 40-year fight for justice by those who never wavered in their belief that Lynette didn’t walk out on her family.

The Murder of Lyn Dawson is told through Chris and Lyn’s daughter Shanelle, the detective who helped bring Dawson to justice, Damian Loone, and the determined reporter who put the case in the spotlight with his viral podcast The Teacher’s Pet, Hedley Thomas.

At the heart of the series is Shanelle Dawson, as she realises that what she has been told her whole life is a lie, and her journey towards the truth: that her mother loved her and would never have left on her own free will. In embracing this reality, Shanelle must also come to terms with the fact that her beloved father is a liar and a murderer.

A mixture of archival imagery, recreations, news sources and interviews pieces together the case from the time Lynette went missing to the remaining unanswered question: where is her body? And will Dawson ever admit to his awful crimes?

THE MURDER OF LYN DAWSON
BEGINS SUNDAY, JULY 9, AT 8.00PM ON CHANNEL 9 & 9NOW
EPISODES 1-2 AVAILABLE ON NINE MEDIA ROOM

Block, rattle & roll

Get ready, Australia. The country’s No. 1 renovation reality program is just around the corner and promises to be the most electrifying yet.

In 2023 The Block celebrates an incredible 19th season and viewers are set to be treated to a blockbuster series like no other.

The mother of all reality programs continues to reinvent itself and this year’s series promises a number of exciting firsts.

State versus state rivalry will be ignited as our five couples will each be flying the flag for their homeland states of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

And in a move set to push our contestants to the brink, all teams will be given the arduous task of creating secondary accommodation on their properties. While adding value and something special to each home, will the extra workload be enough to tip one of our couples over the edge?

Set in the family-friendly suburb of Hampton East, this year’s series of the multi Logie Award winning program features five houses designed and built in the 1950s. Located on the aptly named Charming Street, these grand old dames are now aged in their 70s and are overdue for a contemporary update. Will our fresh-faced Blockheads be up to the challenge?

The five couples in contention for Block glory are:

  • Personal assistant Eliza (37) and integration producer Liberty Paschke (34) – sisters from VIC
  • Firefighter Kyle (36) and teaching aide Leslie Cottone (34) – parents from WA
  • First aid officer Leah (32) and builder Ash Milton (38) – parents from QLD
  • Project manager Kristy (34) and safety officer Brett Beams (34) – married from SA
  • Architect Steph (27) and start-up worker Gian Ottavio (27) – married from NSW

Gold Logie-winning host Scott Cam, back for his 17th series of The Block, is promising a series like no other.

“This series is guaranteed to be a dead-set blockbuster,” he said.

“Our five new teams from across the country are all fired up to make their home states proud. But wait until you see their shock when they find out they’re building not one, but two new abodes, as we throw in a granny flat for good measure. And in a Block first, this year we give all teams their full building schedule ahead of time. Buckle up, Australia. The Block 2023 offers more twists, turns and curve-balls than ever before.”

Scott’s co-host Shelley Craft agrees that this year’s time warp back to the 1950s will provide plenty of surprises along the journey.

“This series’ houses may seem charming on the surface, but our contestants will be in for a shock as they uncover a host of pitfalls not evident upon first inspection,” she said.

“While there are plenty of laughs to be had, viewers can expect an equal number of tears.”

Plus, for the first time in over a decade, a new judge joins Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker.

Real estate expert, Marty Fox, who has sold two houses on The Block before – Harry and Tash’s in Brighton in 2020, and Rachel and Ryan’s in Gisborne in 2022 – will tag-team judging on Sunday nights as Neale partly steps back this season.

This year The Block also celebrates 20 years since the first series in Bondi went to air and changed the Australian television landscape forever.

Executive Producer Julian Cress, who created the show with fellow EP David Barbour, says the 20-year birthday is a fantastic achievement.

“We thought we were pretty lucky to get the show on air in the first year we made it,” he said

“Just getting The Block commissioned was a huge achievement and there is no way we thought we would still be here making the show 20 years later.

“But the great thing about it is we all still love making the show, and no two series of The Block are ever the same, as these five new teams will truly prove this year!”

The Ashes: Third Test exclusive on Nine

The Ashes have taken a fiery turn and England will be out to make a dent in Australia’s 2-0 series lead in the Third Test, exclusive, live and free from 7.30pm AEST Thursday, July 6, on the 9Network and 9Now.

After the thrilling Second Test went down to the wire in a deluge of controversy, the series moves to Headingley in Leeds, and it’s win or bust for England. Australia rose above the hostile crowd at Lord’s to show their mettle and are ready to go up another notch in the north of England.

Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith have led with the bat so far while Pat Cummins has been at his damaging best for the Aussie bowling attack. Captain Ben Stokes will hold the aces for England with his brutal batting style if the home team are to win the third match in the five-test series.

Nine’s commentary team is hosted by Roz Kelly, with expert comments from former Australian captain Mark Taylor, Ashes winner Ian Healy and former international Callum Ferguson. Taylor will be joined on the ground by Louise Ransome.

Mark Taylor said: “After a superb test match at Lord’s, with its share of controversy, the Aussies are a win away from breaking a 22-year drought and winning a series in England.

“A draw will do for Australia but neither side will be thinking that way. The pressure is firmly on England but if their captain Ben Stokes is the benchmark, they will come out swinging in Leeds.

“England have good memories from Leeds four years ago but the Aussies are desperate to hang onto the urn. Another great contest awaits.”

The Financial Review to launch Australia’s first prestige watch fair: About Time

The Australian Financial Review is launching Australia’s first prestige watch fair, to be held in Sydney on September 22 and 23.

The About Time Watch Fair will feature many of the highlights from Geneva’s giant Watches & Wonders fair as well as other recent releases. Thirteen of the world’s finest makers of mechanical watches are taking part. Participants include Cartier, Chopard, Grand Seiko, Hublot, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Louis Vuitton, Panerai, Piaget, Ralph Lauren, Roger Dubuis, Tag Heuer, and Vacheron Constantin.

The Financial Review’s watch editor, Bani McSpedden, said an event like About Time was long overdue. “The Financial Review pioneered coverage of the watch industry in Australia and we’re the only media outlet that covers mechanical watchmakers as the serious businesses that they have become.

“The About Time Watch Fair demonstrates how committed the Financial Review is to deepening our coverage in this area,” McSpedden said.

With The Australian Financial Review Magazine dominating Australia’s monthly magazine insert readership figures – it has a print readership of 481,000 and annual growth of 14%, according to Roy Morgan’s last figures – the upcoming fair reflects Nine’s strength in growing the luxury category.

“There is no better fit for some of the most luxurious brands in the world to partner with the Financial Review for Australia’s first watch fair,” said Amanda Upton, Nine’s Client Director of Luxury & Travel. “We are uniquely positioned to host this event. We have the audience they want, and our long history in writing about watches will give this fair unparalleled credibility and authority.  This is an opportunity for us to invest further in the industry and become the undisputed partner for brands who continue to prioritise investment with us.”

The free two-day event will follow a unique format as participating brands present their latest models in their Sydney CBD boutiques along with masterclasses in watchmaking. There will be a wide assortment of events designed to ensure attendees can enjoy themselves while trying on the latest timepieces. Many brands are holding these presentations in areas of their flagships that are normally only accessible to their VIP customers. There will also be an exclusive lounge area at venue partner The Charles Grand Brasserie and Bar on King Street.

According to official Swiss export figures, sales of watches in the Oceania region are up 21 per cent in the year to May, a rate of growth that’s double the rest of Asia.

Matthew Drummond, editor of AFR Magazine, said “We can see from digital readership data how engaged our subscribers and readers are with news about watches. The Financial Review has often partnered with individual brands to hold events for our subscribers, but this is the first time we’ve held an industry-wide fair in the luxury space. Given our readers’ interest in watches, we’re confident it will be a resounding success.”

About Time will be held on September 22 and 23. Details: www.afr.com/about-time
