The closest season in memory will culminate in a frenzy for a ticket to the top eight and a place in the finals across an epic weekend of NRL and NRLW on Channel 9HD and 9Now.

In Thursday Night Footy, Nicho Hynes and the fifth-placed Sharks swim into the warm waters of North Queensland to meet the ninth-placed Cowboys, who cannot afford a loss on their uphill ride to a finals berth.

Five-star Cowboy Jason Taumalolo will play his 250th NRL game and he’ll back-up from gunslinging backline weapons Tom Dearden and Scott Drinkwater to get the job done.

It’s all or nothing on Friday Night Footy when the Eels and Roosters meet. Both sides are level on the ladder, just one win outside the top eight, and can end each other’s season.

Start your Saturday right with an NRLW triple-header from 11.00am before battening down the hatches for a storm from the south as Craig Bellamy’s Melbourne outfit look to gather more momentum ahead of the finals against the Dragons at 7.30pm in Saturday Night Footy

Sunday is a rest day, but not for NRL on Nine with Andrew Johns, Billy Slater, Brad Fittler and Danika Mason dissecting the week of footy at 11.00am on the Sunday Footy Show. Straight after comes an NRLW double-header, before Sunday Arvo Footy pits the Raiders against the Bulldogs.

Brands nail viewer engagement as The Block builds a huge Total TV audience

As The Block premiered last week to a Total TV audience of nearly 1.2 million across the four episodes, the 19th season of Australia’s favourite renovation program proved there is no other show that consistently provides a platform for brands to tell their stories.

Attracting a Total TV audience of 1.148 million across the four episodes (625,000 metro/ 258,000 regional/ 264,000 Live + VOD), The Block provides a premium platform for brands that can leverage Nine’s unrivalled Total TV, Total Audio and Total Publishing assets to achieve reach at scale.

Set in the leafy Melbourne suburb of Hampton East, the new series features five houses designed and built in the 1950s, and will feature some of the biggest brands in Australia. Ten brands return this year as major partners including Aldi, BlueScope Steel, Disney+, Domain, Ford, hipages, McCafé, Mitre 10, Lite n’ Easy and Xero.

With The Block proving to be one of the most consistently successful programs on Australian screens, new brands joining the show are Arnott’s, CommBank, Youi and Aussie Broadband.

Nicki Kenyon, Director of Powered, said The Block provides a premium platform for brands to reach audiences at scale.

“The Block continues to provide a premium platform for brands to reach audiences at scale. Year after year we have seen some of Australia’s favourite brands return to support The Block and work with us on exciting cross platform integrations,” said Kenyon.

With partners knowing they can trust the power of The Block brand year after year, it is no surprise that several brands have partnered with the show for multiple seasons, including Mitre 10, which this year marks 16 seasons as a sponsor and McCafe which this year celebrates a decade-long association with the show.

The Block continues tonight at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

Nine launches new round of successful radio and audio internship program

Nine’s talk radio stations have launched the next round of the highly successful internship program, designed to discover and mentor the next generation of radio professionals.

The six-week internships are offered at each station: Sydney’s 2GB, Melbourne’s 3AW, Brisbane’s 4BC and 6PR in Perth, and are paid positions, with the opportunity to lead to employment.

Now in its fifth round, the program provides interns with invaluable hands-on experience across a broad range of skills, including radio production, broadcasting, journalism and social media. They will also benefit from a comprehensive understanding of what it’s like to work in a leading radio and audio business, with support from some of the best talent in the industry.

Tom Malone, Managing Director of Nine Radio, said: “Nine’s radio and audio internship program has unearthed some exceptional talent within the industry – from a range of different backgrounds – and I can’t wait to see who we discover next.”

“The volume and quality of applications continues to increase with each round of the program, which shows the next generation understands the value and strength of live and local talk radio, and they are excited to be part of its future.”

Previous Nine radio and audio intern, Ray Shindoo, said: “I had such a wonderful experience interning at 4BC. I had the chance to work with all the different radio programs as well as the newsroom, where I got to write news scripts, interview sources, practice reading news, and communicate with the radio listeners. I loved the hands-on nature of the internship as it helped me develop and polish my skills.”

Former intern, Juliet Rayner, said: “In pursuing an internship with 2GB, I was awarded a safe space to learn and grow, whilst also being paid – a very rare opportunity in the Australian media landscape. While I moved between teams weekly, I had constant contact with my supervisor, who ensured I was connected to the new team and had all the information I needed before starting each week. I never once felt like my role was to grab coffees or sit quietly in the corner. I was encouraged and given incredible opportunities for continued work with 2GB which I am very grateful for.”

This is the second of three internship rounds that will run in 2023. Applications close on 18 August, with successful applicants commencing in mid-September.

To apply in your city, click on the link below:
Sydney – 2GB
Melbourne – 3AW

The Hundred with Andy Lee returns for season 5

The Hundred with Andy Lee returns to Channel 9 and 9Now on Tuesday, August 8, at 8.40pm, with comedians joining 100 viewers to tell us what Australians really think.

The weekly, one-hour, prime time comedy panel show hosted by Andy Lee includes 100 everyday Australians who Zoom into the studio from all over the country. Handpicked to represent the makeup of Australia, “The Hundred” are standing by to be polled live and provide the stories behind the stats as three comedy panellists battle it out to see who knows Australia best.

The Hundred with Andy Lee tackles the big weekly talking points in a funny and irreverent way. Whatever story has gripped the nation each week, we will be able to find out what Australia really thinks about it. There will also be a host of brave famous faces who will “Face The Hundred” to see just how many people can put a name to the face – there is nowhere to hide and pride is on the line!

Comedian Mike Goldstein and media personality Sophie Monk will serve as regular panellists in 2023. A selection of the country’s finest comedians will round out the trio to share their take on the hot topics at hand. They include Tom GleesonLuke McGregorKate Langbroek and Joel Creasey

“The results are in – this season of The Hundred is our best yet. Ninety-two per cent of me is thrilled to be working alongside Andy and Mike again, which is a pretty big percentage,” Sophie said.

In the first episode we’ll find out how many of our Hundred have seen their neighbours naked and what percentage have been arrested overseas. We’ll discover how common it is to forget a partner’s birthday and see just how many can recognise television personality and landscaper extraordinaire Jamie Durie, when he arrives to “Face The Hundred”.

Andy said: “I cannot wait to get into season five alongside Mike Goldstein and Sophie Monk. We’ve got a whole new bunch of stats and games to play, but I’m mostly looking forward to hearing someone overshare about how they shouldn’t have slept with someone that wasn’t their husband on their wedding day … or something like that.”

The Hundred with Andy Lee is an original concept by Screentime Australia and Andy Lee, produced by Endemol Shine Australia in association with Channel 9.

It’s Brisbane’s time for new news

Re-branded Brisbane Times delivers a new era of news for Australia’s fastest-growing region.

Nine today reveals a new-look Brisbane Times, with an increased investment in an expanded editorial team, refreshed brand identity, a stunning marketing campaign and a new vigour to provide Queenslanders with news like never before.

As the population of south-east Queensland surges, creating both opportunities and challenges, the need for quality journalism that better reflects the region has never been more crucial. A stronger Brisbane Times with an expanded editorial offering will provide a much-needed independent voice in a market that is growing faster than any other city in Australia.

With numerous new editorial hires, including Food and Culture Editor Matt Shea, City Reporter Courtney Kruk and Sport Reporter Nick Wright, Brisbane Times will set a new benchmark in local news for a changing, progressive city. As Brisbane becomes a growth area with a Gen Z demographic, the investment in the masthead in the lead up to the Olympics in 2032 will ensure the region is served with world-class journalism into the future.

James Chessell, Nine’s Managing Director – Publishing, said: “It’s no small thing to be investing in a newsroom at a time when many other media organisations are pulling back, but we strongly believe Brisbane deserves a stronger alternative. Brisbane Times has always put independent journalism – not ideology – at the centre of what it does. By committing more resources to the newsroom we will be able to serve its growing audience with more stories that make a meaningful difference to their lives.”

A prominent marketing campaign will today roll-out across Queensland, utilising out-of-home, Nine’s in-house inventory and digital assets. Using striking still photos and video content from internationally-renowned photojournalist Adam Ferguson, the campaign taps into the new energy of Brisbane.

Ferguson, who was raised in Brisbane and has been the recipient of multiple awards including from World Press Photo and National Portrait Gallery of Australia, went on assignment to capture the DNA of Brisbane and its evolution into a city that is eclectic, globally-renowned and recently named as the country’s sporting capital.

His imagery used in the 30-second television commercial is complemented by bespoke music created by Bluey composer Joff Bush. Brisbane-based Bush composed the piece, which captures the bright and optimistic tone that Brisbane Times reflects. The voiceover is provided by Guyala Bayles, a 21-year-old model, poet and actress originally from the Murri community in Queensland.

Sean Parnell, editor of Brisbane Times, said: “We want Brisbane Times to reflect the community it serves – vibrant, innovative, hopeful and diverse – while still being on-topic and on-trend.

“People have been telling us they want something different and something better. Through our recent hires, ongoing changes to our newsroom, extra features for subscribers and a more modern, digital website, we now have the capability to do that. We will continue to keep engaging with the community to make Brisbane Times a success, and to reflect our fast-changing region.”

With 784,000 readers per month* already choosing the Brisbane Times as their go-to source for quality, independent news, the masthead will enhance the key brands that readers across Australia trust, from Domain, Good FoodTraveller to Drive and Good Weekend.
