9News Queensland’s Hannah’s Story podcast wins gold at New York Festival Radio Awards

Presented by 9News Queensland’s Melissa Downes, produced by 9News Queensland’s Jess Lodge, and with sound design by 9Podcast’s Adam Buncher – the podcast soared to the top of Australian charts last year and garnered global recognition for its compelling account of one of the worst acts of domestic violence Australia has ever seen; the day Hannah Clarke and her three children were set on fire and killed in their car in a quiet Brisbane street by their father, Hannah’s estranged husband, Rowan Baxter.

Across six episodes, Hannah’s Story amplifies the voices of Hannah’s loved ones, the courageous first responders, witnesses, domestic violence experts and political leaders. It serves as a catalyst for community dialogue on coercive control, emphasising the crucial importance of identifying red flags in friendships and relationships to prevent further domestic atrocities.

Hannah’s Story has earned numerous awards and has become an essential tool in educational programs on coercive control. It has been integrated into initiatives by both the Queensland Police and Victoria Police, as well as serves as a central component of a nationwide educational program led by Small Steps 4 Hannah.

The podcast has also played a pivotal role in supporting Hannah’s parents, Sue and Lloyd Clarke, in their advocacy through Small Steps 4 Hannah, whose tireless work led to the historic passing of “Hannah’s Law” on 6 March 2024, which criminalised coercive control in Queensland.

9News Queensland’s Jess Lodge and Melissa Downes said: “We are so proud to see Hannah’s Story recognised on the global stage. Our deepest thanks go to Hannah’s parents Sue and Lloyd, brother Nathanial, friends and all those who contributed to this podcast. To have this incredibly important story reaching an international audience is a credit to their courage and commitment to creating change and saving lives.”

9News Queensland Director of News, Amanda Paterson, said: “From earning national accolades to becoming a source of education on coercive control and now gaining international recognition, Hannah’s Story epitomises the impactful journalism of 9News Queensland.

“Hannah’s Story has not only captivated audiences but has also played a crucial role in helping save the lives of countless Queenslanders, Australians and now, individuals worldwide. Setting the benchmark for 9News podcasts, 9News Queensland is committed to continuing to share compelling local stories that make a lasting impact.”

Head of 9Podcasts, Mia Stern, said: ‘Hannah’s Story is an extraordinary example of the power of investigative journalism in podcasting, and to see the incredible work of Melissa, Jess and Adam recognised on a global stage is a testament to their dedication and commitment to the integrity of this story.

“Podcasting provides a unique canvas for journalists to delve deep into the intricacies of human experiences and at 9Podcasts, we are committed to collaborating with Nine’s award-winning journalists to share these important stories.”

FW’s groundbreaking podcast ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ recognised with global award

In 2023, There’s No Place Like Home returned with an eight-part series that focused on the signs and red flags for non-physical abuse, from love bombing and gaslighting to isolation and financial control.

FW’s Founder and Managing Director Helen McCabe says conversations around women’s safety have only become more prominent since production began two years ago.

“The right to be safe from abuse is at the forefront of conversations not just here in Australia but globally. This award acknowledges the importance of listening to victim-survivors on the insidious impact of non-physical forms of violence.”

Studies from Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety show the majority of victim-survivors will reach out to their family and friends first. As a result, this season we teamed experts, policymakers and victim-survivors with the latest data to help listeners recognise relationship red flags, and learn how to seek support – either for themselves or loved ones.

To create There’s No Place Like Home, Future Women has collaborated with Commonwealth Bank, which is supporting long-term financial independence for victim-survivors of financial abuse through CommBank Next Chapter.

Glenn Robbins and Dave O’Neil are ‘Somehow Related’ to 9Podcasts

Hosted by legendary Aussie comedians, Glenn Robbins and Dave O’NeilSomehow Related is the show that proves even the most seemingly random subjects are in fact related – somehow.

Ever wondered if there’s a secret connection between the Nazi regime and Fanta; the Italian Republic and bright red underpants, or even greyhounds and The Bible? Well, wonder no more.

In each hilarious episode, Robbins and O’Neill cycle through what they know about the topics, reminisce, sometimes call on help from friends and indulge with a little thinking music before giving it all to guess the link.

Co-host and self-declared expert, Glenn Robbins said: “Along with our trusty sidekick Sam, every episode is a journey of discovery where we uncover fascinating facts and nuggets of knowledge that will, if nothing else, arm you with something interesting to say when things go quiet at your next dinner party.”

Fellow self-described expert, Dave O’Neil said: “Sure, we might talk about ourselves more than the topic, and sure, we might drop the odd inappropriate joke, and sure, we might even reenact historical moments with questionable accuracy – but don’t hold it against us, we’re giving it our best shot.”

Somehow Related has been downloaded more than 4 million times over it’s 300-episode run, and featured some of Australia’s most-loved comedians to help connect the dots, including Sam Pang, Kate Langbroek, Ross Noble, Lawrence Mooney.

Some of the discoveries made on Somehow Related include:

  • Italy and Red Underpants
  • Nazis and Fanta
  • David Bowie and Scouts
  • Witches and Graffiti
  • American Prisons and Rodeo
  • Lego and Tyres
  • Walt Disney and Cricket

Nine’s Head of Podcasts, Mia Stern said: “We are thrilled to welcome Glenn and Dave’s Somehow Related, to the 9Podcast network. Their unique blend of trivia, humour and unexpected connection will resonate with our listeners and compliment our growing slate of original podcasts, offering advertisers more opportunities to connect with engaged audiences, at scale.”

2024 Nine Telethon raises $6,791,588 for Mater Little Miracles

Nine Queensland Managing Director Kylie Blucher, Mater Mothers’ Director of Neonatology Dr Pita Birch, 9News Queensland’s Andrew Lofthouse, Melissa Downes and Aislin Kriukelis, Mater Foundation CEO Andrew Thomas and Mater Foundation Board Chair Virginia Ryan

This generous sum allows Mater, Australia’s busiest maternity care provider, to ensure Queensland’s sickest and tiniest babies will continue to have access to life-saving care as their families receive ongoing support.

The 2024 Nine Telethon spotlighted the extraordinary work of Mater by sharing the real and resilient stories from its Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) and celebrating the life-saving and life-changing care provided by Mater’s devoted clinical teams.

In a heartwarming display of unity, people from all corners of the Sunshine State donated generously to aid their fellow Queenslanders and support Mater in being a leader in neonatal critical care and maternal foetal medicine.

The outpouring of support was magnified by notable contributions from the Federal Government ($2 million), the Queensland Government ($1.5 million), and inaugural presenting partners: The Lott by Golden CasketSuncorp and Plantation Homes. The Brisbane Broncos added to the donation tally by auctioning off captain Adam Reynolds’ and club veteran Corey Oates’ football boots, which echo the size of the seriously ill and premature babies tended to by Mater – more than 2,000 each year.

Managing Director of Nine Queensland and Nine Northern New South Wales, Kylie Blucher, said:

“Once again the Nine Telethon has worked its magic, leaving an indelible mark and transforming the lives of countless Queensland families. It’s truly heartwarming to witness our community uniting to support our own, and I am thrilled that Mater Little Miracles can continue to provide Queensland’s most vulnerable infants with the best possible start to life, thanks to these life-saving funds.

“My heartfelt gratitude extends to Nine Queensland’s dedicated production team and 9News Queensland and Nine talent, whose unwavering dedication has been instrumental in achieving this wonderful outcome for Mater Little Miracles.”

Mater Foundation CEO, Andrew Thomas, said:

“What an extraordinary evening! Thanks to the Nine Telethon, the incredible sum of $6,791,588 ensures that more medical miracles are now within reach. These funds are truly life-changing for sick and premature babies.”

“The generosity from the community allows us to purchase the latest technology and equipment and invest in world-class research to improve the survival rates and long term outcomes for our tiniest patients. We want babies to survive; however, we also want them to thrive and live a full life without any physical or intellectual disability.

“Each dollar raised not only brings hope to countless Queensland families but also lays a solid foundation for a brighter, healthier future. On behalf of our amazing clinicians and our brilliant researchers, I express our sincere gratitude to the Nine Telethon for standing with us on this journey to support Queensland families for years to come.”

The Nine Telethon, broadcast from Mater Mothers’ Hospital, featured Queensland’s longest-serving presenting duo, 9News Queensland’s Melissa Downes and Andrew Lofthouse, welcoming viewers into the NCCU ward with 9News Queensland’s Aislin Kriukelis, and into the Nine Telethon Call Centre with NRL on Nine’s Peter Psaltis and Sam Thaiday. There were also special appearances by Paralympic athletes Paige Greco and Torita Blake, former tennis player John Millman, Channel 9’s The King, Wally Lewis, and more.

Presenting Partners of the 2024 Nine Telethon included the Queensland Government, Suncorp, The Lott by Golden Casket, and Plantation Homes.
