Key sport commercial roles announced as Nine heads into new Olympic sporting era

Nine has appointed Andrew Cann and Andrew Nicholls to senior roles in Nine’s Sport Commercial leadership team, in a move that further supercharges Nine’s enviable sports marketing platform as it engages with the market on its Olympic commercial offering.

As Director of Sales – Olympic Games, Cann will lead the development of Nine’s Olympic commercial strategy and implementation across all platforms, providing opportunities for brands within Nine’s Olympic coverage never before available in Australia.

Nicholls has been appointed as Director of Sales Operations – Sport and Olympic Games and will lead the sport operations strategy and implementation across the Olympics and all of Nine’s sport platforms, continuing to drive the evolution of connecting its sport assets for brands.

Both will report to Director of Sales – Sport and Olympic Games, Matthew Granger.

The appointments of these two senior roles represents a key step in Nine’s investment into sport as a powerful content platform across a Total Television, Total Publishing and Total Audio landscape.

Combined with its 20 million signed-in user data proposition, Nine continues to lead the way in delivering the needs of audiences and partners, giving clients the opportunity to connect their brands in meaningful and contextual ways that deliver powerful business and marketing results.

Matthew Granger, Director of Sales Sport and Olympic Games, said: “Both these appointments herald a new era in growing Nine’s mega sport marketing platform. Andrew Cann brings a depth of experience and passion in sport from both his roles at Nine and his time at the AFL. He is the perfect person to drive and lead our Olympics proposition.”

“Andrew Nicholls’ media sport pedigree is without peer. His experience and expertise across all elements of the sport media landscape makes him the perfect addition to our team to assist Nine in enabling brands to make the most of our unrivalled content ecosystem. I am delighted Andrew will be part of Team Sport at Nine as we continue to unlock those advantages for our partners.”

Cann has most recently been Group Business Director in Melbourne for Nine, having worked previously in Sport Sales at Nine and with the AFL Commercial team.

Andrew Cann said: “I am pumped to be joining the Sport team to lead Nine’s Commercial Olympic offering for what will be an unforgettable Olympic Games for both audiences and brands. With the strengths of Nine’s content platforms and the proven track record of WWOS, I can’t wait to work with brands to unlock and connect them with audiences in a way, and on a scale, never seen before in this country. The Olympic Games are a unique and special event, and I feel privileged to be part of Nines Olympic journey. Bring on Paris 2024!”

Nicholls has most recently run his own media and sport consultancy firm, having worked previously as Director of Sport – Network Sales and Head of Sport Sales Strategy at Seven West Media.

“I started my career at Nine and to return and be surrounded by such a compelling arsenal of broadcast, publishing and audio assets is super exciting. To be working with the strongest sporting stable, featuring codes as diverse and prestigious as the Olympics, NRL, Australian Open Tennis and the suite of Grand Slams, the Ashes, Rugby Union and Swimming championships to name just a few, is an incredible opportunity. WWOS is the home of unforgettable, high-engagement, unscripted television and in this new Olympic era, with the platforms at our disposal, what we can do together with our clients and their brands is unparalleled,” said Andrew Nicholls.

Both will commence their roles in the coming weeks.

Future Women’s ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ podcast named as a finalist in the 15th Annual Shorty Awards

Future Women’s groundbreaking podcast, ‘There’s No Place Like Home is a finalist in the 15th Annual Shorty Awards, an international competition honouring outstanding work in digital and social media.

There’s No Place Like Home is a ten-part series, created in collaboration with Commonwealth Bank Next Chapter, that reveals the true scourge of domestic and family violence in Australia.

The podcast sensitively interweaves the shocking true stories of domestic and family violence survivors, with expert commentary and evidence. It has been awarded locally at the 2022 Mumbrella Publish Awards.

Future Women’s Founder and Managing Director Helen McCabe said being shortlisted is a testament to the importance and impact of victim-survivors telling their own stories, in their own words.

“In the last two years Australia has had its own reckoning about sexual assault, abuse and domestic violence. This recognition shows the value of centring victim-survivors in these conversations not just in Australia, but on the global stage.”

Future Women’s Deputy Managing Director, Jamila Rizvi, said it was a privilege to work alongside the experts in the family violence sector.“One woman is killed by a partner or former partner, every week, in Australia. The people who work every day to prevent and respond to family violence, are tireless in their pursuit of a change in these shocking statistics.”

To create There’s No Place Like Home, Future Women has collaborated with Commonwealth Bank, which is supporting long-term financial independence for victim-survivors of financial abuse through CommBank Next Chapter.

Season two, which is now in production, will launch in June 2023.

Australia’s first-class travel destination, Traveller, takes off with a new digital look and commercial offering

New-look superbrand travel title features destination and holiday guides by Australia’s most experienced travel writers and a dynamic offering for brands.

As Australia experiences a post-pandemic travel boom, the country’s most respected and knowledgeable travel writers are leading Traveller into a bold new digital era, with a revamped offering for subscribers and brands as the site is fully integrated into Nine’s metro titles.

From today, traveller.com.au is fully integrated into The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times and WAtoday websites, with new editorial offerings including holiday and destination guides; an affordable travel series; enhanced site navigation and search capability, with readers able to save stories in preparation for their next trip and share travel tips.

Featuring travel experts in editors Trudi Jenkins, Anthony Dennis and Craig Platt as well as regular columnists Ben Groundwater, Michael Gebicki and Lee Tulloch, subscribers can now access a wealth of ideas to help them plan their holiday.

Destination Guides are an indispensable resource full of must-do highlights, and where to stay and eat when planning a trip to places both in Australia and overseas, including London, Fiji, New York and Bali. Holiday Guides will focus on a theme or type of holiday such as beaches and islands, solo travel, sustainable holidays and cruising, featuring tips and recommendations for every type of traveller.

The guides also provide a dynamic opportunity for brands, with the new-look site able to connect them with a high-value, engaged audience through immersive branded content, contextual alignment in the guides and sponsorship opportunities.

While Australians are some of the world’s keenest travellers, it’s not as easy as it used to be to set off on holiday, with cost and capacity still a factor. Traveller’s new affordable travel series will feature stories including how to do Europe on a budget, best-value family destinations and the best beach stays in South-East Asia for less than $100 a night.

“Traveller is Australia’s most-trusted publisher of expert advice, reviews and the go-to destination for anyone in search of inspiration and insider knowledge for their next holiday,” said Julia Naughton, Head of Life of The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times and WAtoday.

“Whether planning, or just dreaming of an adventure, this integration represents our commitment to giving Traveller readers a revitalised experience, and our subscribers more value than ever before.”

With a monthly cross-platform readership of 1.6 million* and a social-media presence of nearly 300,000 people, Traveller is a travel destination in its own right.

“A much-loved brand like Traveller, with a team that has an enviable knowledge of this segment, is the perfect environment for brands to align with, ensuring they target audiences at scale who are passionate about travel whether it be domestic or international,” said Jo Clasby, Director of Sales Total Publishing.

“This new-look site will enable brands to interact with a high-value travel audience like never before, from solus EDMs, branded content and high-impact contextual alignment to social extensions and sponsorships of newsletters and podcasts.”

Buckle up for more holiday hilarity when travel guides returns for a world tour

Calling all international tourists: it’s time to book your boarding pass for the new season of the TV Week Logie Award-winning Travel Guides, which returns with more spectacular destinations and outrageous laughs on Wednesday, April 19, at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, AT 7.30PM ON CHANNEL 9 & 9NOW

Featuring more epic overseas adventures, the all-new season of Travel Guides sees the return of our favourite travel critics: the budget-hunting Fren family from Newcastle, fun-loving Matt and Brett, jetsetters Kevin and Janetta, and best mates Kev, Dorian and Teng. While cowgirl Mel takes time off to be with her baby, twin sister Stack is joined by their younger brother, Josh

Josh has never been overseas before, and he has packed an extra pair of jocks along with his passport. Like his sisters, Josh is a true-blue country boy who will no doubt struggle with the lingo, the customs and the crowds in foreign lands. But lucky for him, he is just as game as the girls and will give anything a crack.

In this side-splitting new season our Guides are off to some of the world’s biggest bucket-list destinations as they hit unsuspecting Europe, the UK, South Africa, Asia and beyond.

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a beach bum, escape with our Guides to extraordinary locations as they island-hop along the Croatian coast, ride camels through the Moroccan desert, hang with orangutans in Borneo, and even visit Santa in the Arctic Circle.

Each episode will see our excitable Travel Guides pack their bags and set off on a journey full of new experiences and adventures. They share their unfiltered and brutally honest opinions as they encounter the same week-long holiday, which includes crazy activities, different foods, must-see tourist spots, and all sorts of local culture.

When one person’s idea of heavenly bliss is another’s idea of travelling hell, opinions will differ wildly, often leading to outrageous reviews as our fearless Guides let rip, tell it how they see it, and rate each holiday out of five stars

Narrated by popular Aussie comedian Denise ScottTravel Guides is produced by Nine.
