US Open tennis 2024 live and free on the 9Network

Over 14 days, the cream of the crop will battle it out on the hardcourts of Flushing Meadows in New York, with the tournament broadcast live and free on 9Go!HD and 9Now, and every match available to stream ad-free, live and on demand on Stan Sport, with centre court available in 4K UHD.

Jelena Dokic, Georgie Parker and Brett Phillips will provide expert commentary for Nine’s Wide World of Sports coverage each day of play, while 9News will cover all the action as the big stories develop.

In the men’s singles,Carlos Alcaraz (World No.3), Novak Djokovic (World No.2) and Jannik Sinner (World No.1) are ready to lock horns for the final Grand Slam title of the year.

For Alcaraz, a US Open title would cap an all-time season, making it his third major of the year. Alcaraz and 2024 Paris Olympic gold medal winner Djokovic have been dominant performers of the past two Grand Slam seasons, each claiming three major titles, two US Open crowns among them.

The lone unclaimed Grand Slam tournament over that span, this year’s Australian Open, went to Sinner. 2020 US Open finalist Alexander Zverev (World No.4) and 2021 champion and two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev (World No.5) loom as legitimate contenders for this year’s title, and plenty of potential spoilers could threaten in the men’s draw. Among them are the American quintet of Taylor FritzSebastian KordaTommy PaulBen Shelton and Frances Tiafoe.

Flying the Aussie flag will be World No. 10 Alex De Minaur, returning after being sidelined for a month with a hip injury, plus Alexei Popyrin and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Jelena Dokic said: “Alex, I would usually say, has a great chance to at least get to the last eight, especially on hardcourt which suits his game. But the injury that has kept him off the court since Wimbledon is a big factor, especially with hardcourts and his reliance on movement and fitness. The draw will be key for Alex, if he can get a match or two to play himself in.

“Let’s not forget Popyrin and his Masters 1000 win in Canada. He will now be seeded at the US Open. He has a big game, big serve and forehand, and I look forward to seeing what he can do in New York on the fast hardcourts.”

The women’s singles title is wide open in a field featuring World No.1 Iga Świątek, looking to add a hardcourt major to her trophy cabinet. World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka and American favourite Coco Guaff (World No.3) are also among the fancied contenders.

After her loss in the Wimbledon finals, Italian Jasmine Paolini (World No.5) will make a return to the hardcourts, with Elena Rybakina (World No.4) also a major threat.

This year eight Australians will compete in the women’s singles, making it our biggest representation at the US Open since 1989. They are Daria Saville, Aijla TomljanovicTaylah Preston, Ariana RodionovaMaya JointKimberely BirrellDestanee Aiava and Priscilla Hon.

Jelena Dokic said: “I am looking forward to all the Aussies playing, and hopefully Ajla can make a good run too. She is always dangerous, especially if she can get a few matches under her belt.

“It’s an incredibly open tournament this year for both men and women. I think there will be surprises and upsets and there are quite a few players with an opportunity to win.”

The Eels, led by Mr 100 Per Cent Effort, Clint Gutherson, are out of finals contention but hungry to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon. They’ll be counting on dynamic Blaize Talagi to keep up his impressive scoring form, with 11 tries in 12 games.

He’ll be joined by Johnathan ThurstonPaul Vautin and Cameron SmithDanika Mason and Darren Lockyer will report from the sidelines, with Peter Psaltis in commentary.

On Saturday Night Footy, the Rabbitohs face the Knights, who must win to have a sliver of a chance of making the top eight. The Rabbitohs need plenty of support for hooker Damian Cook, who has been their best player of late. For the Knights, Jack Cogger returns at five-eighth.

On Sunday Arvo Footy, the Dragons – who last made the finals in 2018 – aim to cap their last game at WIN Stadium with a win over the high-flying Sharks, who are clinging onto a top four berth.

For the Dragons, tough forward Raymond Faitala-Mariner returns to the bench and the new Ben Hunt-Jack Bird halves combination offers dangerous potency. Cronulla get a host of players back, including Braydon TrindallKayal Iro and Tom Hazelton.

Round 25 kicks off with a tough Thursday Night Footy test for the battling Tigers against the classy Sea Eagles, captained by a red-hot Daly Cherry-Evans who has scored in their last 11 encounters. The Tigers, facing a third consecutive wooden spoon, need crafty hooker Apisai Koroisau on song to have any hope of springing an upset.

Beyond The Dream | Curtis McGrath Unstoppable

MEET THE SOLDIER-TURNED-SPORTING STAR AND HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS
PREMIERE MONDAY, AUGUST 26, AT 8.45PM ON CHANNEL 9 & 9NOW
FINAL DOCUMENTARY IN BEYOND THE DREAM SERIES FOR PARIS 2024

Produced by 60 Minutes, this documentary offers exclusive first-time access into Curtis’s professional and personal life. We learn first hand of the resilience and determination that saw McGrath become a Paralympian in 2016, after losing both his legs while deployed as a soldier in Afghanistan. Now, a three-time Paralympic gold medallist and twelve-time world champion, Curtis is heading into Paris 2024 with a target on his back as the one to beat. Racing in, not one, but two completely different events, he continues to impress both on and off the water.

At 18, Curtis McGrath joined the Australian Army as a combat engineer, and in 2012 he was sent to war-torn Afghanistan in a frontline role. It was there his life was changed forever in an instant, when he stepped on an improvised explosive device he’d missed during clearance which blew off both his legs. Lucky to survive, Curtis joked with his mates he would go on to become a Paralympian. No one realised his gallows humour was a prophecy of what was to come.

Astonishingly, within eight short months Curtis mastered his chosen sport of para-canoe and was breaking records as the new world champion, and in just four years, was representing Australia at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games winning his first gold medal.

Now set to co-captain the Australian Paralympic team in Paris 2024, we sit down to talk with those closest to him including his wife Rachel Martin, parents Paul and Kim McGrath, and fellow Afghanistan veteran Mac Pitcher, who have all supported Curtis to become the elite athlete and man he is today.

We also meet the Paddle Australia coaches and team working with Curtis to keep him and our para-athletes on top of their game: Anna Wood, the National Para-canoe Coach; Jesse Fleming, the Strength and Conditioning Coach; and some of the sports science team. They offer insight into how Curtis’s extraordinary strength of mind, natural talent and unparalleled dedication continue to play a key part in his impressive success. And we get exclusive access into his intense training routine in the lead-up to this year’s Paralympic Games alongside fellow Paralympians also off to Paris.

This one-hour special showcases Curtis’s extraordinary life and spirit. It’s a story of fierce determination, incredible resilience, unstoppable grit and endless optimism. Having maintained his position as an elite athlete for an impressive ten years now, consistently overcoming challenges to be his best, he makes his new life post accident and meteoric rise to fame appear almost effortless.

Beyond his dream of becoming a Paralympian, the humble Curtis McGrath continues to set and chase goals for himself. Seemingly unstoppable, he’s driven to get the most out of his ability and life. The next big challenge Curtis will face following his return from competing in Paris is fatherhood, as he and the love of his life, Rachel, are expecting their first baby, a boy.

Beyond The Dream goes beyond the headlines to discover the untold stories that have led to some of the greatest Olympic and Paralympic moments. With unprecedented access, capturing the raw spirit of some of the greatest athletes of all time.

Beyond The Dream | Curtis McGrath Unstoppable is produced by 60 Minutes for the 9Network.

The Financial Review remains Australia’s most read premium business title

The premium business masthead has experienced four consecutive quarters of growth across its Total News Publishing audience, with 985,000 people reading a print edition of the Financial Review in the past four weeks.

Highlighting the strength of the Financial Review’s digital offering, 78% of AFR readers engage with the masthead’s online publication, which has once again grown since last quarter – the fourth consecutive quarter of online growth.

The Monday to Friday print edition recorded annual growth of 9% year-on-year, for an average issue readership of 268,000, while the AFR Weekend Saturday print edition recorded quarterly growth with a readership of 182,000.

The Australian Financial Review Magazine continues to dominate Australia’s monthly magazine insert figures, with a print readership of 500,000 – compared to its direct competitor Wish that has had a readership drop of -20% year on year. Fin! Magazine has also seen quarterly and annual growth (8% and 10% respectively).

Editor-in-chief James Chessell said: “These results reflect the high quality and award-winning journalism in The Australian Financial Review. With our focus on growing our subscriber base, our digital strategy continues to gain strength as is evidenced by nearly 80% of our audience engaging with our sites.”

The Age maintains its lead against its competitor nationally

The Age has cemented its place as the nation’s second most read multi-platform news brand after The Sydney Morning Herald and is ahead of its main competitor The Herald Sun by 650,000 readers.

The Monday to Friday print edition recorded a readership of 240,000, while the Saturday edition has 389,000 print readers. In the last four weeks 990,000 people on average have read a print edition of The Age and in total, one in five Australians get their news from The Age.

Across The Age and the Herald, the country’s most prestigious food news brand, Good Food, recorded a Total News Publishing readership of 1.6 million, with its readership up 16% quarterly, while Traveller also recorded quarterly growth of 12% with 1.29 million readers.

Good Weekend recorded an average issue print readership of 690,000, while Sunday Life recorded an average issue print readership of 356,000 and Domain recorded readership of 455,000.

“The Age is unquestionably Victoria’s premier news brand. In a year in which The Age celebrates its 170th birthday, it has exposed the corruption at the heart of the CFMEU and the union’s unseemly ties to state and federal Labor,” said Executive Editor Luke McIlveen.

“Led by The Age’s chief investigative reporter, Nick McKenzie, the Building Bad series began on the streets of Melbourne but quickly spread to Canberra and every CFMEU branch in the country.”

“This was a truly great piece of journalism – and our loyal readers at The Age know other newspapers gave up on this standard of investigative reporting a long time ago.”

The Sydney Morning Herald dominates to remain Australia’s No.1 most read multi-platform news brand

With one in three Australian readers choosing the Herald to stay informed, the masthead dominates the multi-platform news brand landscape and nearly doubles The Daily Telegraph readership (7.18 million versus The Telegraph’s 3.94 million) in the latest figures in the 12-month period ending June 2024.

The Monday to Friday print edition recorded an average issue readership of 381,000, while Saturday’s print edition recorded 477,000 readers. In the last four weeks, 1.47 million people on average have read a print edition of the Herald, while The Sun Herald print edition is read by 395,000 people every Sunday.

Across the Herald and The Age, the country’s most prestigious food news brand, Good Food, recorded a Total News readership of 1.6 million, with its readership up 16% quarterly, while Traveller also recorded quarterly growth of 12% with 1.29 million readers.

Good Weekend recorded an average issue print readership of 690,000, while Sunday Life recorded an average issue print readership of 356,000 and Domain recorded readership of 455,000.

“The Sydney Morning Herald’s dominance over our rivals is testament to the unique bond between our skilled journalists and our audience. Our readers trust us to write the truth – sometimes at great personal risk to our journalists and their sources – and we try to live up to that expectation every day,” said Executive Editor Luke McIlveen.

“Nowhere was this more evident than our exclusive series on the corruption and criminality at the heart of the CFMEU, which has been the most important piece of journalism in Australia in 2024.”

“In a fiercely competitive and uncertain media landscape, the Herald remains true to the principles carved out in our newsroom 193 years ago.”
