A haunting new podcast, The Saints, is set to unravel one of Australia’s most shocking and heartbreaking stories: the tragic death of eight-year-old Elizabeth Struhs. Since its revelation in 2022, the case of Elizabeth’s death at the hands of a religious cult in regional Queensland has stunned audiences worldwide, shedding light on the dangers of extreme religious groups.
At the heart of The Saints is a story of lost innocence, unwavering faith, and the fatal consequences of unchecked devotion. Elizabeth, who suffered from a treatable illness, was denied medical care by her parents and the members of their radical religious community, all of whom believed divine intervention would heal her. Her avoidable death led to one of Australia’s largest-ever mass trials, where 14 cult members – including her parents and brother – were found guilty of her tragic death.
This hard-hitting podcast is a joint investigation by A Current Affair and 9Podcasts, presented by award-winning journalist Pippa Bradshaw, whose extensive 15-year career in investigative reporting brings a uniquely insightful perspective. With over three years of in-depth research, Bradshaw delves into Elizabeth’s heartbreaking story, unraveling the series of failures that led to her death and exposing the dark history of the cult that took her life.
“This case is one of the most confronting but significant stories I’ve ever covered,” says Bradshaw.
“Sharing Elizabeth’s story in a podcast allows us to explore the complexities and shocking aspects of her case in more detail than ever before. My aim is to honour Elizabeth, shed light on the truth of her avoidable death, and address the many troubling questions that were left unanswered.”
The Saints takes listeners on a gripping journey through seven meticulously crafted episodes, which include exclusive interviews, harrowing police interrogations, and expert analysis. The podcast provides an intimate, chilling look into the cult’s operations—how its leader manipulated religious scripture to control followers, how new recruits were drawn in, and the broken families left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.
Cameron Schoenfisch, whose son Lachlan was a convicted cult member, reflects on the profound trauma caused by the cult’s grip. “I can’t really convey our suffering and the cost and the trauma. We didn’t realise it could go so bad, so quick.”
In a warning to other parents, Schoenfisch adds, “Don’t let this happen to you. Don’t let this happen to your loved ones. Hold your children close and tell them you love them, because you never know when that’s going to be the last chance you get.”
Beyond its exploration of cult dynamics, The Saints raises important questions about potential systemic failures within Australia’s justice and child protection systems.
“The cult responsible for Elizabeth’s death is now locked behind bars, but critical questions remain,” says Bradshaw.
“Elizabeth was left in the care of a religious cult with known extreme and dangerous beliefs, and a mother who had previously confessed that she would continue to withhold vital medication from her daughter. Through the final episodes of this podcast, we seek to investigate whether systemic failures contributed to Elizabeth’s tragic death.”
The Saints is brought to life by an award-winning team renowned for their gripping, chart-topping true crime productions:
Executive Producer Jess Lodge – Creator of the internationally celebrated Hannah’s Story and the chart-topping The Ultimate Sacrifice.
Sound Designer & Editor Hannah Sterling – The creative force behind the hit investigative podcast Just Married: The Anthea Bradshaw Mystery.
Prepare to be captivated by The Saints, a podcast that digs deeper than headlines, revealing the heartbreaking and disturbing truth behind one of Australia’s most unsettling criminal cases.
The trailer is available now, with episodes streaming weekly from April 7 on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

A gripping new real-life series, West Coast Cops, premieres Friday, March 28, at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now, following seven British police officers who trade the streets of the UK for the vast and daunting landscape of Western Australia.
Viewers get a front-row seat for an unfiltered look at the challenges brave police officers face in a foreign environment where no two days are ever the same.
Moving to a different country is never easy, but for these officers and their families the transition is even more intense. From dealing with Australia’s heat and vast open roads to adapting to new policing tactics, they are pushed to their limits as they train, integrate, and prove themselves as part of the WA Police Force.
The eight-part series, narrated by Lisa McCune, offers an intimate look at the challenges of uprooting a life and starting over on the other side of the world. As these coppers undergo rigorous training, including tasers and firearms, their families face their own struggles: finding new homes, making new friends, and learning to live thousands of kilometres away from loved ones.
In episode one, Detective Constable Anna Miller, her husband Andy and their three children must adapt fast to life Down Under while she embarks on this career defining challenge. Meanwhile, Sergeant Ben Woods, a seasoned officer, takes a huge step back in his career in the hope of building a better life in Perth. As they face three months of intensive training, the question remains – will they have what it takes to earn their place in the ranks of WA law enforcement?
Beyond the personal journeys, West Coast Cops gives an insight into the vital role WA police officers play in keeping the community safe, as well as highlighting those who train, mentor and guide recruits through the realities of frontline policing.

The countdown has officially begun for this year’s Nine Telethon supporting Mater Little Miracles, which will be broadcast across Channel 9 and 9Now on Saturday 26 April.
The iconic event raises critical funds towards life-saving research, care and equipment at Mater – ensuring Queensland babies have the best possible start to life.
This year’s Nine Telethon is off to a flying start after Health Minister Tim Nicholls announced a commitment of $1,500,000 on behalf of the Queensland Government.
Minister Nicholls said that it was an honour for the Crisafulli Government to launch this year’s Nine Telethon with a $1.5 million donation.
“Queensland babies need and deserve the best possible care,” Minister Nicholls said.
“Mater provides critical care for vulnerable babies from across the state, so I’m encouraging Queenslanders everywhere to support this cause and the dedicated frontline teams who care for our little miracles.”
The Nine Telethon will give viewers an insight into the brave stories of Mater’s miracle babies, their families and the Mater teams who support their inspirational health journeys.
Mater Foundation Chief Executive Andrew Thomas said this year’s broadcast will include special performances by Australian music stars Tones & I and Mark Seymour.
“Mater and our frontline Mater Mothers’ staff are incredibly grateful to Channel Nine for sharing the stories of many Mater Little Miracles, the Queensland Government for generously kick-starting the donations, and all our presenting partners,” Mr Thomas said.
“We’re sure that our Mater babies, parents and staff – supported by Tones & I and Mark Seymour – will provide an incredible show for Nine viewers.
“The Nine Telethon is off to a tremendous start and we’re confident that big-hearted Queenslanders will give our Mater Little Miracles another giant lift on April 26.”
Ipswich parents Georgia and Elliott Gillespie joined the launch to thank Mater for helping to save their newborn son Miles, who was born at Mater Mothers’ Hospital on March 4.
During her pregnancy, tests revealed Mrs Gillespie was at risk of developing haemolytic disease, in which a mother’s blood antibodies attack her baby’s red blood cells, causing anaemia and potentially severe complications.
Baby Miles was monitored extensively at the Mater Centre for Maternal Fetal Medicine by specialist Dr Glenn Gardener and obstetrician Dr Kate Strawson.
While Miles was still in his mother’s womb, Dr Gardener performed three life-saving intrauterine red blood cell transfusions into his umbilical cord.
Miles was delivered via a caesarean section at 37 weeks’ and left hospital a week later.
“Miles came home last week and it was so special, his three doting big sisters were ready for that momentous day – as were we!” Mrs Gillespie said.
“The care we received was amazing – and shows why the Nine Telethon is such a great cause.”
Managing Director for Nine Queensland and Northern New South Wales, Kylie Blucher, said the Telethon target for this year was $9m, after $6.79m was raised last year.
“Babies like Miles are the reason we put our heart and soul into every single Nine Telethon,” Ms Blucher said.
“Every year Channel Nine’s Telethon highlights what amazingly compassionate people Queenslanders are and how much they appreciate the hard work the Mater does, day in and day out.
“We know this year will be no different and we can’t wait for the response from our viewers.”

Brisbane’s 4BC has seen a huge spike in digital streaming, with session starts up 79% year-on-year in the past week. The increase came as Queenslanders turned to the station for critical updates and reliable information during Cyclone Alfred.
Total listening hours (TLH) for 4BC also jumped 45% compared to the same period last year, while cumulative audience spiked 54% as listeners stayed connected through the storm’s impact, highlighting the vital role of live and local news coverage in times of crisis.
4BC Station Manager, Siobhain McDonnell said the team worked tirelessly to keep listeners informed as the situation unfolded.
“When extreme weather hits, radio is more than just a source of news – it’s a lifeline. Our team at 4BC was committed to delivering accurate and timely updates to support the Brisbane community through Cyclone Alfred. This surge in streaming numbers reflects the trust our listeners place in us, and we’re very grateful for their support.” McDonnell said.
4BC was the only station in Brisbane providing dedicated emergency broadcasts 24 hours a day from Thursday through until Monday night.
“Our presenters, producers, newsroom staff and audio engineers have worked around the clock to provide the latest information while also giving people a sense of connection during a really tough time. I’m so proud of them and I want to thank them for everything they’ve done”, said McDonnell.
As Queensland continues to recover, 4BC remains committed to keeping Brisbane informed and connected with the latest news and community support updates.
