The Block Nails Effectiveness for Brands as the 21st Season Kicks Off

With new brands Bunnings, Chemist Warehouse, Google, MG Motor, Snooze and Simparica Trio joining The Block this year, the series will feature the ‘Sponsor Village Saloon’, a collection of shops from McCafe, Chemist Warehouse, Bunnings mini-store and The Block Pop-Up Store revolving around a prop Saloon found at a nearby museum/cafe.

The Village becomes the central hub for contestants throughout the series, illustrating how brand integration in The Block sets the bar for entertainment formats.

Estimated by producers to have injected nearly $8 million into the local Daylesford economy [including using local tradespeople, suppliers, caterers, accommodation and more] during production of this series, Gemba insights reveal returning brands that are associated with the show experience an upswing in consideration from consumers.

Insights commissioned by Gemba for Nine has found that brands featured in the series are more likely to be purchased by Block audiences. It found that brands and products featured are 67% more likely to be used by Australians against Gemba benchmarks, and that despite consideration increasing across the board, returning Block sponsors saw a 40% increase in consideration.

A group of diverse brands return this year as major partners including ALDI, Arnott’s, TRUECORE® steel and COLORBOND® steel, CommBank, Domain and McCafe.

Sarah Stewart, Powered’s Director of Content Partnerships and Client Experience, said The Block is one of Australia’s great television success stories that can provide a safe premium environment for brands.

“The breadth of major Australian brands aligning with the series is a testament to its enduring cultural relevance and impact. In its 21st season we’re thrilled to welcome many exciting new partners, while also celebrating the loyalty of long-standing brands. This combination proves once again The Block is one of Australia’s most sought-after environments for brands,” she said.

Hosted by Scott Cam and Shelley Craft, The Block provides a premium platform for brands that can leverage Nine’s unrivalled ecosystem to achieve reach at scale, and is one of the most consistently successful programs on Australian screens.

Filmed in Victoria’s picturesque Daylesford – known as one of Australia’s top weekend getaway destinations – the new series features five new teams who are for the first time building homes from scratch – each on over 2,300 sqm blocks of land.

Stewart Gurney, Nine Powered’s Director of Strategy and Effectiveness, said The Block is a powerful platform for driving product usage and brand consideration.

“Sponsorships and integration on the block are exceptionally well received by viewers. Our research proves that brand integrations within the show are more engaging and recalled versus stand alone TVCS and this translates into product/brand usage,” he said.

“Claimed usage of brands and products featured in the block is 67% higher versus other sponsorship properties. Another superpower of The Block is the cumulative impact it offers returning sponsors. The Block is brilliant at driving brand consideration across the board, but returning sponsors see on average a +40% improvement year on year.”

The Block screens Sundays at 7.00pm and Monday-Wednesday at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

A Current Affair Goes Behind The Scenes With New Podcast ‘That’s ACA’

Hosted by seasoned reporters Steve Marshall and Lizzie PearlThat’s ACA offers a candid look into the world of television reporting. Each week, the hosts dissect the biggest stories, share their personal experiences on the road and talk to the program’s stable of reporters about the weird and wonderful assignments that capture the nation’s attention.

“There’s a saying in the ACA office, ‘that’s so ACA’,” explains co-host Steve Marshall.

“It’s those stories that are quintessentially Australian, that make you laugh, make you cry, that fire you up, or just make you shake your head and say… ‘Only in Australia’. This podcast is a celebration of those moments and a chance for our viewers to be part of the conversation.”

Co-host Lizzie Pearl adds, “Our viewers are so invested in these stories and we’re constantly asked what happens when the cameras are off. This podcast is our chance to finally pull back the curtain, share the hilarious or heartfelt moments that don’t make it to air and really celebrate the craft of storytelling with our audience and our colleagues.”

The podcast provides a new way for audiences to connect with the brand and its dedicated team of journalists.

“A Current Affair has been a staple in Australian living rooms for decades,” said Executive Producer, Amy McCarthy.

“That’s ACA is a natural evolution for the brand, allowing us to connect with our audience on a deeper level and on new platforms. It’s an exciting opportunity to showcase the incredible work and unique personalities of our reporting team, strengthening the bond we have with our viewers beyond the nightly broadcast.”

New episodes of That’s ACA are released every Friday morning. The first three episodes are available now:

Episode 1: The Art of the Bounce
How A Current Affair reporters approach this signature move seen on the show. Plus people power – how viewers are literally saving lives. And can one story make all the difference? We also answer your curly questions.

Episode 2: Whistleblowers, Wine and Wins
Some of our biggest scoops come from people or whistleblowers who have the courage to stand up to the big guys. Plus, Lizzie’s rather tipsy long-lunch with a group of Nonnos. And stairway to heaven?…or hell? Justice for Bernice.

Episode 3: It’s Not Personal, It’s Strictly Business
Ally Langdon sits down with former American mobster and member of the Colombo crime family, Michael Franzese. He retired from the mob life in the mid nineties after a stint in jail and has since become a motivational speaker for youth, schools and prisons. He was in Australia recently and here is the full interview.

AFR Magazine Celebrates 30 Years of Prestige With a 120-Page Gold-Foiled Special Edition And Watch Supplement

The exclusive profile interview with Altman was written by the Financial Review’s technology editor, Paul Smith, who travelled to the company’s office in San Francisco. Altman discusses his brief sacking as CEO of OpenAI, the advent of general artificial intelligence when machines can out-think humans and the future of work. In his extensively researched 5800-word feature, Smith explores how Altman is simultaneously viewed in tech circles as a flawed leader who tells different things to different people, and also as a visionary who is building the most consequential technology since the advent of the internet.

Matthew Drummond takes an indepth look at the vision for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympics with a host of Queensland leaders including organising committee president Andrew Liveris, Olympics powerbroker John Coates, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner. Drummond’s piece looks at how Brisbane – the smallest city to be awarded the Olympics since Helsinki in 1952 – is going through monumental change to become a global city and how it will progress to host the world’s largest sporting event.

The edition also features Monica Lewisky, who talks to the Financial Review’s US correspondent Jessica Gardner about how she took back control of the story of what happened in the Oval Office in 1995. Lewinksy discusses surviving shame and how she’s built a career in media production, including the launch of her new podcast series, Reclaiming.

“The calibre of the people who want to sit down with AFR Magazine is proof that even in the digitally-fuelled AI era, a printed magazine sets the standard for journalism, for storytelling, for creative inspiration and enjoyment,” said Drummond.

After three decades of shaping and reflecting Australia’s cultural and business successes, the edition is a highlight of Nine’s commitment to creating impactful, best-in-class prestige partnerships in the luxury sector.

The 30th anniversary issue features a gold-foiled cover with gatefold partner Rolex as well as special execution by Range Rover. It contains advertisements from a slew of luxury brands as well as a 44-page Watch supplement created by the Financial Review’s watch editor Bani McSpedden and watch writer Luke Benedictus. The Watch supplement marks the official launch of the Financial Review’s About Time Watch Weekend involving 12 prestige brands. Now in its 3rd year, the event is now exclusive to Financial Review subscribers because of strong demand for bookings.

“For 30 years, local and international advertising partners have recognised and aligned themselves with the balance of substance and style brought to life in AFR Magazine,” said Chloe Moo, Nine Publishing’s client director of luxury. “The size and strength of our 30th anniversary edition is testament to our enduring partnerships with leading luxury brands.”

The issue was launched at a 30th anniversary celebration dinner held at Bennelong at Sydney Opera House on July 22 and co-hosted with Range Rover, which was among the first luxury brands to advertise in AFR Magazine. Among the 100 guests were members of the Rich List, Young Rich List, Power List and leaders from across business, finance, design, hospitality, the arts and sport as well as senior Nine executives.

Select guests were driven to and from the event in Range Rovers. Bennelong was the venue partner and House of Arras was the beverage partner. During the dinner Drummond hosted a talk with Andrew Liveris AO about his vision for the Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics.
