Phil Gould Returns To Henson Park
Rugby league expert commentator Phil “Gus” Gould returns to Henson Park, his old stomping ground, to call the Intrust Super Premiership game between the Newtown Jets and North Sydney Bears LIVE and FREE on Nine and 9Now this Saturday at 1.00pm AEST in NSW.
Gould, who played for Newtown in their 1981 Grand Final loss to Parramatta, donned their famous blue and white jersey again in 1982, before Newtown’s last premiership season in 1983.
Gould said: “I’m incredibly excited to be invited to call the Jets v Bears NSW Cup game at Henson Park this Saturday afternoon, a ground with so much history and charm.
“I first visited this ground back in the 1960s when dad used to take me to watch the old Newtown Bluebags. Little did we know that one day I would playing first grade football for the Newtown Jets at this same venue.
“I marvel at the passion of many loyal fans who work so hard to keep the Newtown and North Sydney clubs alive and competing in this important competition. It’s marvellous that Nine’s Wide World of Sports covers these matches on free-to-air television.”
The last free-to-air top-level rugby league match televised from Henson Park was Round 24 in 1987 between the Roosters and Rabbitohs.
Joining Gould in commentary from the sidelines as the clubs play for the Frank Hyde Shield will be Joel Caine and NRL premiership winner Jamie Soward.
The Jets will be steered around the park by Cronulla Sharks rising stars Kyle Flanagan, the son of Cronulla Sharks coach Shane Flanagan, at halfback and Blayke Brailey at hooker.
The North Sydney Bears will be bolstered by former NSW Origin hooker Robbie Farah and his Rabbitohs teammates Kyle Turner, Hymel Hunt and Braidon Burns who will be out to spoil the party for the Jets.
Queensland viewers will receive Intrust Super Cup coverage of the Norths Devils vs Mackay Cutters game. In commentary, former Queensland Origin representative and NRL premiership winner Scott Sattler will be joined by Ben Dobbin and Peter Psaltis.
