9Honey research shows family and travel remain top of Australian women’s Christmas list
Australia’s leading women’s lifestyle network has revealed the findings of research into the state of Australian families’ financial situation in the lead-up to Christmas and the new year.
The study – coinciding with 9honey’s 7th birthday today – has found that despite the cost of living crunch, one in five Australian women are planning to spend more than $1000 to celebrate the festive season.
The Nine Audience insights team found 54% of 9honey readers will spend the same amount this year as they did in Christmas 2022, 33% less, and 13% will spend more.
A third of women are planning to cut back how much they spend at Christmas time this year as they combat increasing cost of living pressures, and 30% of 9honey readers are limiting themselves to a budget of $100 to $499.
“Australian families have weathered tough economic pressures over the past three years, having to make some serious decisions around where and how they spend their money. However, one thing they’re not willing to compromise on is celebrating at Christmas time, and if they have to find a way to do that on a budget, something 9honey knows how to navigate, then they will,” said 9honey Editor Karina Recchi.
Research has indicated the biggest financial stresses for Australian families at the present moment are grocery prices, interest rates, rent and petrol prices.*
“With the launch of 9honey Money earlier this year, our team has never been more determined to make life easier for our readers and offer real solutions with expert consumer tips and budgeting advice,” said Recchi.
Despite the economic crunch, one in two Australian families have indicated they are planning to travel in the next 12 months.
The study found families were planning to spend an average of $8,785 on travel and accommodation, with Queensland easily the most popular travel destination, followed by Victoria, the United States and Europe.
The research comes as 9honey announces two new columnists – writer and award-winning podcaster Zoe Marshall will write a regular parenting column, while sports presenter and proud Gamilaroi and Dunghutti woman Marlee Silva will write for 9honey latest, adding to its growing array of voices.
Zoe Marshall said: “I’m so excited to be the new parenting columnist at 9honey. Parenting is so tricky, I find the community we slowly build when we become parents makes us feel less lonely and isolated. I hope these columns can make other parents feel like we are now part of their tribe.”
