The Australian Financial Review will hold its inaugural Government Summit in early 2021, bringing together Australia’s most senior public sector executives to explore opportunities for innovation in public service delivery.

The announcement of the Summit comes as the Financial Review launches its new Inside Government newsletter today. The role of government in the economy has vastly expanded in response to the pandemic. So it is important to understand how the Federal and state public sectors work.

Led by Government editor Tom Burton and with our specialist reporters, the Financial Review has expanded reporting on policy and the public sector to shed light on the engine rooms of Federal and state governments.

The new weekly Inside Government newsletter will connect government and business professionals with extensive reporting on public policy and regulatory change.

Delivered to your email inbox every Friday, the Inside Government newsletter will provide expert analysis of important government policy and regulatory decisions, initiatives and developments, and how those decisions affect business and the wider community.

It will delve into public sector appointments and contracts, and present key developments in an engaging format for senior public leaders and the diaspora of businesses who work with the public sector.

Increased focus on the public sector is timely. “Public policy and regulation and the delivery of a vast array of services are all driven by Australia’s 1.2 million public servants and their leaders,” says Burton.

Governments are responsible for almost a third of all spending in the economy, and through public businesses and regulation “they directly influence around half the entire economy.”

Burton is a three-time Walkley award winner and has worked in government, specialising in communications. He was formerly chief political correspondent and Canberra bureau chief for the Financial Review, founding publisher of The Mandarin and executive editor of The Sydney Morning Herald.
