The Battle for Gen Z "Share of Stomach"
Subway faced a critical demographic hurdle: the need to connect with Gen Z at scale to drive long-term business growth. In the highly competitive QSR category, Subway was battling for “share of stomach” among a youth audience that values authenticity over traditional advertising.
Some 82% of Love Island Australia viewers had eaten QSR food in the last month, but only 16% had eaten Subway – the ambition was to transform Subway from a lunch choice that was not remembered, into a brand that resonated with youth.
"The Ultimate Bombshell"
Gen Z are all about unfiltered entertainment and real, honest food, but there was a hunger gap with Love Island Australia – a potential audience of youth QSR consumers who were not considering Subway. To bridge this gap, Subway didn’t become a Love Island Australia sponsor, they became an Islander.
Key Strategic Pillars:
Contextual Resonance: Using the familiar voice of Sophie Monk and utilising recognisable LIAU IP to wrap Subway into the show’s heat, vernacular, and drama.
Screen Stack: Weaving Subway throughout Nine’s LIAU ecosystem to deliver Footlong-sized impact across social, broadcast, and digital touchpoints.
Cultural Alignment: Leveraging the existing global alignment with Love Island UK to provide instant familiarity.
This cemented Subway’s place in the Villa, making the brand synonymous with summer’s biggest youth entertainment event.
Campaign execution was a masterclass in multi-platform integration, coordinated across Spain and Australia at scale to deliver a cohesive narrative on every Nine touchpoint.
Pre-Launch Buzz: Subway inclusion in cast announcements and “Islander Player Cards” on social media to build anticipation before the first episode went to air.
Broadcast Integration: Seamless integration into in-show moments, including a “Spin the Sub” game, Subway-branded pool inflatables, and a “Mr Sub-Lime” male beauty pageant featuring humorously branded swimwear. Subway was the crux of these episodes for the Gen Z viewer, adding to the entertainment factor.
Tailored Creative: Bespoke TVCs and billboards that mirrored the Villa’s aesthetic, featuring neon Subway logos and Sophie Monk’s voiceover to ensure creative felt native to the environment, leveraging already successful brand cues and footage, and tailoring it to the LIAU environment.
Social-First Content: Prioritising “incidental” authenticity, including content filmed at a Subway restaurant on Sophie Monk’s personal Instagram, bridging the gap between the screen and the real world.
Retail Conversion: Creative heroed the famous Footlong and the limited-time Hot Honey range offer, linking the high-energy Villa environment directly to a specific menu item.
