State of Origin 2022 games are the most live streamed programs of all time and the highest rating Origin series since 2019

One of the greatest State of Origin series ever played has attracted record numbers of viewers and set a new Australian record, with the three 2022 games attracting the highest Total TV audience since 2019, and becoming the most-watched live streaming event in Australian history.

Last night’s blockbuster decider in Brisbane, which is being hailed as one of the greatest Origin games ever contested, attracted a national average audience of 2.585 million viewers on Linear TV (Metro: 1.792m / Regional: 793,000) and a Live BVOD figure of 463,000 taking the Total TV audience to 3.048 million viewers.

The Decider was the highest rating Origin game on Total TV since 2019’s Game 1.

Viewers flocked to 9Now, with the game attracting a record BVOD Live average audience of 463,000, up 74% year-on-year, and making it the highest ever live streaming event in Australian TV history.

The three matches have now set the benchmark for live streaming events, with the Sydney, Perth and Brisbane games attracting the three highest BVOD live figures (Game 1: 425,000 / Game 2: 393,000 / Game 3: 463,000) of all time across all broadcasters.

“Congratulations to the NRL and the players involved in last night’s State of Origin Decider,” said Brent Williams, Nine’s Director of Sport. “It provided edge of your seat entertainment and captivated the nation, proving once again that Origin is a sporting event without rival in this country.

“To break the record for highest live streamed event in Australia not once, but twice, in the same series is an incredible achievement.”

The success of the series continues to highlight Nine’s market-leading digital transformation, with Australians devouring State of Origin across a multitude of Nine’s platforms from 9Now, WWOS.com.au, and various mastheads and audio assets.

“The growing scale of 9Now live audiences is now consistently delivering year on year total television audience growth for Nine across our key programming events,” said Mike Sneesby, Nine’s Chief Executive Officer. “Last night’s Origin decider wrapped up a series that has seen the biggest audiences since 2019. Growth in live streaming on 9Now has accelerated, with record numbers of fans choosing to live stream the series.”
