On Air: 9News Goes Live With ‘Future News'

9News has today reached a major milestone in its ‘Future News’ transformation program, with the first live bulletin successfully broadcast using cloud-based news production and curation technologies. In the process, the 9Network has become the first free-to-air broadcaster in the country to achieve this.

9News Morning, anchored by respected presenter Deborah Knight, was produced and aired via storycentric newsroom control and rundown system, Saga, and Mimir, a central cloud media collaboration and asset management platform. 9News is the first Australian newsroom to utilise this technology combination which was built bespoke for Nine’s needs.

Since January 2025, Nine has been undertaking the largest transformation in its history of its TV news production and workflows, under the leadership of Executive Director News & Current Affairs, Fiona Dear. It embraces automated capabilities, digital personalisation, and AI, which will streamline production processes for journalists. Due for national completion by the end of 2027, Future News is the largest project under Nine’s strategic transformation program, Nine2028, and the biggest investment by Nine in news and current affairs in decades.

Nine Managing Director, Streaming and Broadcast, Amanda Laing, said:

“News is our bedrock and a critical pillar of premium content for Nine.
“Audience behaviour has changed and Australians are consuming news on platforms that best suit their needs. We can now meet them where they are faster than ever before – with important and trusted stories that matter. This is a game changer for Nine, 9News and our audiences,” Ms Laing said.

Nine Executive Director, News and Current Affairs, Fiona Dear, said:

“Over the past few years, 9News and Current Affairs has seen strong growth across its digital channels and Total TV audiences. Future News allows us to capitalise on this growth in a way we have been unable to previously, positioning us well for the future.
“While newsrooms have been required to adapt to new technology over the years, we have never fundamentally changed the way news is produced – and that’s exactly what we’ve achieved. We are building a modern, multiskilled newsroom and I’m incredibly proud of the team who have trained and worked tirelessly to execute this transition in a live news environment,”
Ms Dear said.

Nine’s Video Content team who produce and publish to 9News and Current Affairs social media channels also began utilising the new technology suite today, while 9News Sydney’s 4pm and 6pm bulletins will cutover in October, followed by the Today Shows in November.
