Johnathan Thurston’s Boots Raise $35,515 For Tathra Bushfire Victims And NSW Rural Fire Service
The Footy Show and Johnathan Thurston have raised $35,515 for victims left devastated by the Tathra bushfires in a heartwarming response from the rugby league community tonight.
Joining Erin Molan, Andrew Johns, Ryan Girdler and Brad Fittler live on The Footy Show following the Cowboys clash with the Panthers, Thurston announced the winning bid for the boots worn in his 300th NRL game in round one this season.
Shane Fitzsimmons, the NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner, said: “This is an incredibly heartwarming demonstration of support and I am in admiration of all those involved. The generosity of both Johnathan and the bidders will most certainly help the people of Tathra begin the long road to recovery.”
Adam Wiggins, captain of Tathra Rural Fire Brigade, said: “I speak on behalf of the whole brigade when I express our sincere gratitude for the support shown to the Tathra Rural Fire Brigade. Our members do this job for the love of our community, not for reward or recognition. It is truly humbling to see such a generous gesture. Thank you to JT and Nine, you have helped a very grateful community when it is most needed.”
The winning bid was made by Cowboys supporter Daniel Meneghello, who also owns the boots that Thurston scored his 2000th NRL point in.
Bega Valley Shire Council Mayor, Kristy McBain, said: “Bega Valley Shire Council and the residents of the Tathra district have been overwhelmed by the wonderful support that has come from near and far following the bushfire disaster.
“The generosity of JT and the winning bidder, Daniel, is a wonderful example of this and we appreciate it immensely. I’m sure JT has just become the favourite player of many kids and adults in our area – what a champion!
“What is absolutely vital for the Tathra community is that visitors return and enjoy the town and surrounds as they always have. To that end, our business owners and tourism operators are determined to spread the word that Tathra is open for business again.”
